Abbey Bridge Egglestone

Description and History of Site:-
The 24.38m single semi-circular masonry arch of Abbey Bridge spans the river at the point where it enters a limestone gorge. It was built in 1773 for Mr John Sawrey Morrit who wished to improve access to his recently purchased Rokeby Estate. The bridge has castellated parapets and originally there were two toll cottages on the Yorkshire bank. One contained the kitchen and living room and the other the bedrooms, an arrangement which must have resulted in some unusual domestic problems.
