Description and History

'Briefly rejoining the river at a cast iron road bridge the Duke of Northumberland's river is next seen at the Twickenham Road near Mrs Sarah Sermon's Almshouses, much restored Thos. Ingrams almshouses of 1664 emerging at the Mill pond of Kidds Flour Mill. This was demolished in 1941 and was the last mill on the Crane. It was then a five story brick building with wooden extensions. By 1887 it was one of the largest flour mills in England having 29 pairs of stones and 11 rollers powered by three steam engines and two waterwheels. In 1934 it was closed and the business transferred to the Empire Mills at Victoria Docks, a subsidiary of Associated Flour Mills Ltd, later taken over by Rank.
