Description and History

The 5-arch double gangway bridge is 348 ft long, 28 ft wide. The 16 ft space between the 6 ft footways in three centre spans are occupied by 66 ft wide, 12 ft high 32-ton Stoney's patent sluices turned on their sides to disguise their appearance when lifted 2 hours either side of high water. On Middlesex side are three boat rollers and workshops. 250 ft x 26 ft 8 in. lock and Keeper's House are on Surrey side. Red-brick buildings with bath stone dressings, the abutments are concrete with blue Staffordshire brick and granite facings, steel plate and ironwork by Ransome & Rapier. Structure built under leadership of Clr Hilditch to restore level of water at Richmond following removal of Old London Bridge, 1833 and massive extraction of water above Teddington.
