Description and History of Site:-
Brick-built goods warehouse of 5 storeys. Largest railway warehouse at the time of building. Full wagons were lifted to the upper floors by the 30-ton wagon lift which is supported by massive Doric-style columns. Capstans and lifts were powered hydraulically, the power being supplied by a separate hydraulic accumulator. Goods could be transferred between floors by a system of 20 cranes and 36 trap-doors.
Constructed between 1878 and 1883 by the London & North Western Railway Company.
