Description and History of Site:-
The brickworks comprised a production building and office on the road frontage with a strange hybrid Hoffman/Manchester kiln with part missing on its eastern side, with the shale quarry wrapping round the east, north and west sides. Following closure the site was left for many years before it was cleared and landscaped incorporating flooded clay pits.
Isaac Chippendale of Seacroft Mill started to quarry on land on Wood Lane behind the garth and opened his brick and tile works sometime in 1877 and started selling them in 1879. He applied for a siding to be connected to the nearby railway line, but his application was refused so he delivered his bricks to Scholes Station by horse and cart. Isaac died in 1889. The brickworks closed during Great War after which it reopened under the management of Miss Miranda Chippendale with Arthur running the building business. Henry, Donald and Hugh pursued their own careers. The business continued until around 1960. The chimneys were demolished in 1981.
