Description and History of Site:-
Former watermill, now used as scenery workshops for the nearby Yvonne Arnaud theatre.
The present three-storey red brick building dates from 1766 with an extension to the west, dated 1896.
It also housed pumps for the town's water supply, the original pumping system having been set up in the fulling mill in 1701.
The water board leased the mill to the adjacent Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in 1966 for use as workshops. The theatre was built (1965) on the site of the Guildford Foundry of Williams & Filmer, later Filmer & Mason and others.
Behind the theatre in Millmead is the first lock on the Godalming Navigation [SU 996 492]. A serious flood occurred in 1968 and sluice gates now allow controlled flooding of former water meadows upstream. Some 200m downstream is the Town Bridge. An iron bridge replaced a medieval stone bridge in 1900, and was rebuilt in 1985 using original components.
