Description and History of Site:-
Site of the offices for Brunton's Stour Valley Iron Works.
Brunton's started in 1868 as Bartons, after its owner Mainprice Barton. They were general engineers, millwrights and boiler makers.
As Brunton's they began to make marine propellers and stern gear during the First World War and continued to do so until they closed here at the end of the 20th century.
In its heyday the site included a drawing and design workshop, a pattern shop, a foundry, a machine shop, a finishing shop, stores and a propeller repair department.
The offices were at the corner of Station Road and Edgworth Road with the workshops extending back over what is now part of the Waitrose car park.
The company still exists today, based in Clacton.
