Information in town's Heritage Centre:
'The silk industry started in the town in the late 18th century; by the mid 19th many rows of these three-storey weavers' cottages had been built. Although the throwing (spinning) process was mechanised the weaving was done by hand by silk works in these cottages. In 1871 26-year-old William Alston wove at his loom on the first floor of No72 by the light from the extra large windows.'
