Description and History of Site:-
Site abandoned and left to nature
During the Great War a silica quarry was opened on the moor to the south-southwest of the Ravenscar. It supplied ganister to Pickford Holland in Sheffield for the making of refractories there. Initially the ganister was tipped at the side of the Whitby-Scarborough road from where a steam traction engine and trucks transported it to Cloughton Station to be loaded onto trains. Later, to transport the ganister a 1½ mile long narrow gauge tramway with incline connected the quarry with Whitakers' brickworks siding. The narrow gauge tramroad to the silica quarry closed in the 1930s. The silica quarry continued until 1965, with the ganister being taken by road to Hawsker Station.
