Stanley's Technical Trade School

Description and History of Site:-
The Technical Trade School and adjacent Stanley Halls (qv) were built by local industrialist William Stanley 1902-09 from money realised when his firm became limited company, 1900.

The Trade School was based on the German Gewerbeschulen, to combine classroom and workshop teaching for boys 12-15, then a novel idea in Britain. Built 1906, opened 1907. The west tower used to house Stanley's meteorological instruments - another of his interests.

Also on the façade, note the statue 'Labor omnia vincit' at the base of the other tower and the lady with torch and copper flowers in pots, on the roofline of the gable of the large hall.

Buildings in free style form eclectic group in red brick and stone, with two towers and series of gabled roof-lines, adorned with motif of copper flowers in flower pots.

1934 halls given to Corporation but school, combining classroom and workshop teaching, was novel for its day and remains independent technical school.

In recent years the school has expanded into a five-storey office block in South Norwood High Street.
