Ponden Reservoir

Description and History of Site:-
Built by the Keighley Corporation Waterworks as a compensation reservoir, for the mills downstream on the River Worth, as a condition of the impounding of the river by the Watersheddles reservoir. Completed in 1876. From the time of its construction, and for many years afterwards, the discharge of compensation water was controlled by a committee of the Worth mill-owners (this being the usual arrangement at the time). Constructed with an earth embankment, the top level height of the reservoir is about 763 feet (232m) above sea level, the greatest depth 48 feet (14.6m) and the overall capacity 215.5 million gallons (nearly 10 million cubic metres). Now owned and operated by Yorkshire Water and used to supply drinking water to the high level areas of Keighley and adjacent areas.
