Dixon Mill

Description and History of Site:-

Site now redeveloped.Originally dating from the 1630's, a corn and fulling mill built by the Dixon family of Shipley. In 1845, the mill was offered for let, being described as:

" ... the CORN MILL at Dixon Mills, near Shipley, with the Water Wheel and Machinery, Working Six Pairs of Millstones. Also the large BUILDING adjoining, suitable for the woollen or worsted trade, with a Water Wheel and Steam Engine of Twenty-horse Power. ... There is a good Dwelling-house with Out buildings, Eight Cottages, and 23 acres of good Land adjoining." The Leeds Mercury, Feb. 1, 1845.

The mills, and surrounding land, were bought out by Titus Salt in around 1850 for the construction of his complex of mills at Saltaire (WYK00426).
