Britannia Mills

Description and History of Site:-

Erected by Christopher and Edward Waud, and said to be the largest premises in the district for spinning and manufacturing worsted cloth. At the time, it was said that the prospects for the worsted industry were such that so large an outlay was not justified, and the erection of the mills 'an extravagant piece of folly'. The beam engine of 100 HP was also the largest in the district at the time. The venture was in fact successful.

The mills were demolished in 2016 to make way for a proposed new sixth form college.
