Description and History of Site:-
Cast iron beam-bridge of three spans carried on stone abutments and piers, each of three cast iron columns. Cast maker's plate "JOSEPH BUTLER / & CO/ STANNINGLEY / IRON WORKS / NR LEEDS 1856". While still extant, the bridge is in poor condition and not accessible to the public. The bridge was partially destroyed in February 2022 having been struck, during severe flooding, by a pontoon which had been carried away from works on the river upstream. Erected in 1856 to replace a ford across the River Aire allowing access between the Armley Mills and the north bank of the river. The structure was manufactured by Joseph Butler & Co. of Stanningley Iron Works who were well known in the mid C19 for structural ironwork of this type and also provided the roof of York railway station and Leeds Bridge (WYK00883) amongst other projects. The OS mapping suggests that there may have been narrow gauge railway tracks across the bridge at some time.
