Description and History of Site:-
Workshops, now operated by the Canal and River Trust (previously by British Waterways). Originally a general boatyard constructing and repairing barges, bridges and other canal infrastructure, but now only builds lock gates. It is one of only two establishments still doing so (the other is at Bradley near Wolverhampton).

Each lock gate is made for a specific lock, no two are exactly the same size. About 50 gates are made each year at Stanley Ferry. On average, each gate will take about 10 days to build, weigh about 3.6 tonnes and last about 25 years. They are all made of English Oak. Machines are used for the basic tasks of sawing, planing, morticing and milling, but much of the finishing work is done by hand.
