Description and History of Site:-
Hotel and public house complex which retains a small number of features surviving from its use as the original Halifax terminal basin and maintenance workshops for the upper end of the Calder & Hebble Navigation. The original terminus of the Salterhebble branch of the Calder and Hebble Canal was altered to the present configuration and the dry dock added when the canal was extended to Halifax in 1828. The c1767 line of the canal ran close to where the dry dock is located, widening towards its northern end where warehouses were erected. The first of these was probably built before 1768. In 1796 a second warehouse was constructed, the original being insufficient for the level of business. Other buildings around the wharf included a shade and storehouse for the use of the Navigation's carpenters, coal staiths, two dwellinghouse, one for the clerk, and sundry maintenance buildings. The two warehouses were destroyed by fire in 1832 and not replaced owing to the alternative facilities by then available at the Halifax basin, the site was then occupied by a textile mill and now by a public house. Several buildings survived in a derelict state until the mid 1980s, but were demolished to make way for hotel bedrooms. The features which survive are the dry dock of 1828 (SE 09659 22755) and Calder House (SE 09682 22852) which may have been the clerk's house of 1787 or a later building of 1794.
