Bowling Mills

Description and History of Site:-

An area of mills all developed at the same time, and now all demolished. The individual mills included Springfield Mill, Spring Mill, Bowling Mill and Springside Works. In 1905, all described as worsted mills except Spring Mill which was spinning mohair.

Giles & Goodall wrote: "Complex of steam-powered mills developed from the mid 1860s as a speculation by Sir Henry Ripley, owner of Bowling Dyeworks. Mills let on a room and power basis, and tenants at different tunes included worsted spinners and manufacturers, woolcombers and mohair spinners. Ripley's speculation involved the intense development of a block of land, almost entirely built up with mills, warehouses, sheds and ancillary buildings. The Ripleyville estate was developed as workers' housing by the Ripley family: over 200 houses were built, as well as almshouses of 1857 rebuilt in 1871."
