In the early 1840s, 25 year old George Bassett opened up a small retail confectionery and wine business at 30 Broad Street, in the park district of Sheffield. Sixteen years on from opening his first shop, the owner took over further premises and began manufacturing at the America Works, near the Royal Infirmary.
