Markham Main Colliery

Description and History of Site:-
Sunk 1916-24 by Staveley Coal & Iron Co. Power house of concrete blocks, inscribed MM 1920, once had steam winding engine houses on ends. Baths 1938 by W M Traylor. 2 x 1920 Markham & Co horizontal twin cylinder working.

The pit was closed in 1992, reopened in 1994, finally closing in 1996. The site was subsequently redeveloped as a housing estate.
