Whitby Fog Signal

Description and History of Site:-

Foghorn on the coast between Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay.Built on the site of Whitby Low Light, operational from 1903 to 1987, decommissioned by Trinity House in 1988. Known locally as Hawsker Bull, sounding 4 blasts every 90 seconds in foggy conditions through 2 iron Rayleigh trumpets 20ft in length. Powered by compressed air, originally by 2 Hornsby horizontal oil engines. Electrification work completed in 1961. Sold to residential use and now known as Hornblower Lodge.
