Irongate Bridge Reservoir

Description and History of Site:-

Covered reservoir and associated structures remain in the western margins of the original site, those parts to the east and south now redeveloped to housing. The Act sought by the Harrogate Waterworks Company in 1868 makes reference to the construction of a conduit:

"... at a point thirty-eight yards or thereabouts from the western end of the said existing reservoir of the Company, situate on the south side of and adjoining the Irongate Bridge road, and terminating in the intended reservoir next hereinafter described." [The 'intended reservoir' referred to being that at Harlow Hill (NYK01792).]

Probably, the Ironbridge road works were constructed after the earlier Act (of 1846) was obtained by the Company. The works first appear on the OS mapping of 1889 (survey date), divided into several compartments, and persisted in that configuration until 2002 by which time the westernmost of the three compartments had been covered (the planning application for this was in 1975). A planning application to develop the eastern and southern parts of the site for housing was permitted in April 2012.
