Rosedale Tank

Description and History of Site:-
One wall remains standing. This structure, almost certainly related to the railway trackbed on which it stands, is of uncertain purpose. The only feature marked on any historic map at this point is 'Tank'. One plausible explanation is that the building, of which only one wall still stands, had a water tank mounted on its roof and was used for watering locomotives using the railway. The water would have needed to be pumped from below, or supplied by gravity from the dale-side above. It appears to have been constructed from bricks made by the 'Ridge Field' brickworks in Castleford which would date the structure post 1893 (when the 'Ridge Field Brick Co.' was 'newly registered'), The tank does not appear on the OS 6" map of 1891, but is shown on that of 1910.
