Compensation Tap

Description and History of Site:-
Water 'tap' and drain housed in a carved stone surround. The construction of the reservoirs on Barden Moor (1860-1882) by the Bradford Corporation was of concern to the residents of Burnsall since the interception and impounding of the water running off the fells was reducing the water available to the village. In consequence, the Corporation agreed to compensate the residents by installing a piped water supply to three 'taps' spaced along the main street. This record relates to the northernmost of the three. There is a second (including a trough for watering animals) at SE 03200 61270 and the third near the western end of Burnsall Bridge (SE 03192 61157).
