Stainforth Mill

Description and History of Site:-

According to a local writer the corn mill in Stainforth was converted to spin cotton in 1793.It was a small squared building, of unknown height, with a headrace channel running from far upstream on the Ribble, remains of the wheel pit adjacent to the mill building, and scant trace of the open tailrace channel (2018).It began as a medieval manorial soke cornmill and was converted to cotton spinning in 1792-93. First occupied by Redmayne & Armitstead who also had a cotton mill in Giggleswick. The tithe map of 1841 marked it as 'Old Mill' and 'Old Mill Race'.
