Description and History of Site:-
A widespread distribution of stone working sites on the lower slopes of the hill, representing proto-industrial working of Millstone Grit which forms the summit cap of Ingleborough. Surviving evidence is largely in the form of millstone/edge runner roughouts, discarded part-worked dimension or daystone blocks, and negatives (those pieces of a block from which worked stone was cut), as well as tooling marks. Six abandoned millstones/edge runners lie where they landed having been rolled down from the dressing floors upslope. There are numerous examples of tooled blocks, part-worked blocks and negatives. In addition, ten simple shelters have been logged across the entire working area, interpreted as workmen's bad-weather shelters. Some were mere short, curvilinear windbreak walls, others were roofed. Documentary dating evidence relates to the purchase of "one pair of millstones" from "Ingleton Fell" by Thomas Marshe of Hornby corn mill in 1582 (ref. 1 below).
