Description and History of Site:-
The large open quarry working lies below the B6255 and has been largely infilled and landscaped for nature conservation value. Above and adjacent to the road are the scant remains of surface buildings and plant, most of which were demolished as they were considered eyesores in the late 1950s. The trackbed of the standard-gauge rail link is extant and intact from the plant area, parallel to the road, then contouring round Storrs Common to endless-rope haulage the incline top above Easegill Beck, as is the incline bed from there to the former mainline railway at Moorgarth and the stone-built supports for the drumhouse itself at SD7079 7283. A horse-drawn tramway led skips from the quarry floor to the base of an incline connecting quarry with plant area. The rail and incline route was replaced in 1924 by an aerial ropeway, long since demolished apart from the concrete bases of one standard pylon. At its maximum the site employed about 40 men in the quarry, in the plant and engaged in transportation, and at its maximum c. 150 tons of stone per day were despatched to the station. It produced roadstone throughout its life - not granite as such but early Ordovician greywacke. It was closed down as the supply of stone was becoming exhausted so operations were relocated to the present Ingleton Quarry.
