Forcett Branch Railway Bridge (Site Of)

Description and History of Site:-
The Forcett Branch Railway which operated for a hundred years was opened in 1867. It crossed the Tees via a five span masonry arch bridge with the arch rings formed in white firebrick. Following demolition in 1981 bricks marked 'C&M' can be found lying on the river bank and are all that remain of this bridge. These marks identify the bricks as coming from Crook Colliery which was operated by Chapman & Morson between 1864 and 1879.
This bridge carried the branch line used to transport limestone from Forcett quarries to Teesside. It closed in 1966. The viaduct was demolished in 1981.
