Boltby Reservoir

Description and History of Site:-
Boltby Reservoir. Completed in 1882 and decommissioned 2003. It was an earth embankment with puddled clay core originally approximately 100m long and 18.7m high. It impounded 116 000 cu m. of water. Following a number of flooding events and a spillway failure on 19 June 2005 the volume of stored water was reduced in 2007 to 25 000 cu m. by cutting a 11m notch in the dam wall to create a small lake and meandering stream. A former earth embankment dam in the catchment of the River Swale with a surface water area of 2 ha and a capacity of 116 TCM (26 Mgals) at top water level of 197.5 m (648 ft) and with a depth of 13.7 m (45ft). Built originally to supply Thirsk the dam was overtopped during a inensive storm on the xxx and as a result the decision was taken to take the dam out of service. A new outpall chanel was cut through the dam embankment on the line of the old outfall.
