Thornton-le-Dale Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Tall narrow good stone mill of four storeys and loft and odd roof giving four storeys at front and three at the back. Regular square windows with concrete lintels. Water still flows through mill complex. Possibly last watermill to be built (Hatcher, 1973).
Rebuilt 1919 Thornton Beck Converted to offices pre 2011
Existing buildings were built by Squire G.F.G. Hill, 1919 and named Victory Mill in 1921. The mill was subsequently operated by the Burgess family, from Kirby Fleetham, who also held Aiskew Mill in Bedale, and who became famous for making Gold Medal plain flour. In 1963, the mill was adapted for the manufacture of animal feed. Adjacent Mill Managers house at SE 83680 83467 is listed Grade II, but the original mill buildings do not appear to be listed. An adjacent range of buildings shown on earlier OS maps have been demolished and replaced by a residential property. The extensive range of mill buildings was converted to flats in about 2000.
