Grinton Corn Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Small water mill on Grinton Gill which runs behind. Simple block with hipped stone slab roof and no windows or chimneys. Mill-house long narrow building gable end on to Harkerside Lane. Mill up hillside adjacent to mill house site very overgrown. (Hatcher, 1974). Now (2022) only earthworks are thought to remain.

The mill, which went out of use in 1950 was of interest in that its water supply arrangements were quite complex. Although near to Grinton Beck, just to the east, this was an unreliable source often nearly dry in the summer months. The supply used by the mill was taken instead from the Cogden Beck, carried to a small mill dam, and thence across the Grinton Beck on a wooden aqueduct. From there, the mill race continued to the mill before being ultimately discharged into the River Swale at Grinton.
