Hawes Corn Mill

Description and History of Site:-
Adjacent to the old road bridge. Water supplied from natural waterfall upstream of the bridge and carried by a trough supported on corbels (which still remain) let into the retaining wall alongside the beck, thence via a chute under the roadway and another trough to the wheel (probably overshot). According to the Dalesman, July 1953, "the present Conservative club was Mr Edward Chapman's corn mill c1897". The section which carried the wheel, not part of the Conservative club, bears an inscription "IHA 1831". The southern part is now the "Hawes Club" the northern part with distinct evidence for the position of the wheel is intact and in use for unknown purposes.
