Britannia Test House & Testing Machine

Description and History of Site:-

Installed by Dorman, Long & Co Ltd in about 1928 at their Britannia Steel works to test new steel sections for Sidney Harbour Bridge. The 1250 ton tensile strength machine was the largest in the county. It is still operated by Durham Lifting. It is the last surviving building on the Britannia Works site at the end of a short road from Metz Bridge
