Description and History of Site:-
Two half oil jars on the Cale Street side of the building indicate this used to be a shop selling olive oil. The 1891 Kelly's Directory records that Albert Simmonds, Oilman was in residence.

These distinctive giant jars were made in the potting town of Montelupo in Tuscany. They were used to transport Tuscan olive oil into Britain from the early 18th century until the Victorian period. Jars were sometimes mounted on shop fronts of ironmongers to indicate they sold Italian oil.
