LHP valve box cover, Russell Street

Description and History of Site:-

Covers with the letters LHP on them housed stop valves on the London Hydraulic Power system's mains and branches.

This one is in the street outside the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The theatre used hydraulic power to operate safety curtains and show effects such as lifts, etc.

LHP power was available in London until its closure in 1977.
