Deptford Naval Dockyard

Description and History of Site:-
Two iron shipsheds of 1844 are the only surviving structures. Except for the shipsheds the site was cleared in the 2000s. The gate piers on Grove Street (NGR TQ 36693 78242) also remain. Plans for housing developments on the site are currently (2020) proposed. Deptford Dockyard built for Henry 8th's Navy. Following closure the Yard was acquired by the City of London and used as the Foreign cattle Market from 1871. The market closed in 1913 and the site was acquired for the WW1 effort. Post W11, it became an import dock for newsprint and was called Convoys Wharf or Olympia warehouse.
