Aldwych Underground Station

Description and History of Site:-
Disused underground railway station and terminus on the Aldwych branch of the Piccadilly line from Holborn - opened as Strand Station by the Great Northern Piccadilly & Brompton Railway 30 November 1907 - renamed Aldwych 9 May 1915 - terminus of the 573 yard branch - one of the two platforms was little used after 1912 and later closed completely - all services were suspended during WWII - (22 September 1940 - 1 July 1946) - and the tunnels used as an air raid shelter and museum store (British Museum.) The station was closed on 3 October 1994 although it is used occasionally by film / TV companies. The station frontages in Strand and Surrey Street remain recognisable. The booking office (not as old as it looks) is preserved but access to the platforms is via stairs only - shafts were provided for four lifts (!) although only two were installed. The lifts remain but are no longer usable. The original STRAND station name is still visible on the street frontages and, in tiles, on one of the platforms.
