Down Street Station

Description and History of Site:-
Disused underground railway station on the Piccadilly line between Green Park and Hyde Park Corner Stations. The street frontage and access (via stairs only - lifts have been removed) survives and is in use by railway personnel - also for occasional guided public tours. Parts of the western end of the deep level station was demolished soon after closure to provide for the installation of a reversing siding (which has staff access from Hyde Park Corner) which remains in use for stabling / turning back trains as required. The yellow brick walls separating the platforms from the running line can be seen from trains. The station opened 15 March 1907 - closed 22 May 1932 as a consequence of relocating surface access to neighbouring stations when escalators replaced lifts (especially at Green Park). Down Street was used during WWII as the headquarters of the Railway Executive Committee
