Battersea Park Station

Description and History of Site:-

Railway station opened as York Road Station LBSCR Station 1 May 1867; renamed York Road & Battersea Park Station (LBSCR) 1 November 1870; renamed Battersea Park & York Road Station (LBSCR) 1 January 1877; renamed Battersea Park Station (2)(LBSCR) 1 June 1885 - this is the surviving station of that name. The three-storey station building stands in an angle between two brick viaducts and has polychrome round-headed deep-set brick openings at ground and second floor levels, and shallow French-style windows in heavy ashlar between them on the first floor, separated by broad ashlar bands. Prominent keystones display incised flower motifs, and the dentilled roof line is punctuated by paired mullions. Very high ceilinged ticket hall, partly top lit; this is divided by a row of round-headed arches on iron columns with foliated capitals. From the arch spandrels moulded maidens' heads look down from roundels. Walls have blind round-headed arcading below a cornice. Large bosses support pendant lighting.nThe five high-level platforms are reached by staircases built within the arches of the adjoining viaducts, connected by an enclosed timber walkway. The platform buildings are wooden. The station and adjoining bridge have been (2003) recently restored. [Details from Gordon Biddle] 3-storey station with massive architectural detailing, built 1865-67 for LBSCR. Bridge outside station retains original decorative cast-iron arched ornamental fascia, 1865, with company arms although main girders renewed.
