Hammersmith Bridge

Description and History of Site:-

Replacement for the William Tierney Clark suspension bridge of 1827. Present bridge designed by Bazalgette and built by Dixon, Appleby and Thorne 1883-1887 (opened 11th June). Iron-frame towers clad in cast iron partly gilt carry the suspension links and are mounted on the original 1827 piers. Numerous recent closures for strengthening works and defects.
