Former Coach Building Works

Description and History of Site:-
Formerly Hooper & Co Office block on Kings Rd, works behind. Garage fronting Smith Terrace (entrance at No.44A), 1910. Painted advertisement on side 'GARAGE/HOOPER & CO/MOTOR ENGINEERS/AND/MOTOR BODY/BUILDERS/BYAPPOINTMENT/TO/HIS MAJESTY/THE KING'. Hooper's established 1805 in Haymarket. Leading coachbuilders, holding royal warrants from 1830 to closure, 1959. Built bodies on Daimlers for Edward VII, George V, and on royal Rolls-Royces, also many specialised bodies: Patronised by foreign heads of state. After WW2 attempted to boost British cars by producing 'Docker' Daimlers, Chelsea factory biggest of kind in London. 1918, established aircraft works at East Lane, North Wembley (q.v.).

Facade seems to have been saved, providing the front to Atlantic Court.
