Hampstead Road Locks, Regent's Canal

Description and History of Site:-

Top lock of Regent's Canal lying at end of the Long Pound (22 miles from Cowley Lock). First lock of flight of three, is only one on Regent's Canal to retain original two chambers complete with gates. Battlemented, stuccoed lock cottage. Site of Sir William Congreve's ill-conceived pneumatic caisson lock experiment of 1814. Towpath bridge is unusual cast iron tied arch with clear 80 ft span c. 1850. Lock gate winch re-erected here in 1972 from Limehouse Lock on the Lee Navigation (363808, Tower Hamlets). Relocated cast iron A-frame winch by Redpath & Leigh, 1865. Above the lock, Dingwall's Wharf former timber yard and stables besides small basin. Another basin to west, with cast-iron arched bridge c. 1856, beneath later London and Birmingham Railway interchange warehouse. There were 44 other basins here.
