Description and History of Site:-
GER extended their mainline, coming off viaduct into deep cutting, passing beneath Shoreditch High St into this new terminus (architect Edward Wilson, engineer to GER) replacing Bishopsgate which became goods depot. Western train-shed, partially opened, 1874, completed 1875, is magnificent cathedral of iron. Great Eastern Hotel added 1884, architect Charles Barry; interior of Abercorn Rooms, 1901 are of note. Eastern train-shed built 1891-5. In 1875 platforms 1 & 2 were connected by tunnel to Circle line, abandoned 1904; tunnel now LT canteen. Whole complex, together with adjacent Broad Street station (which is now entirely gone), redeveloped. Western trainshed extended to south in original style. March 2000, Station hotel re-opened
