Description and History of Site:-
Tall slender brick tower of six storeys. Pitched. Small square windows under flat brick arches stone sills. Balcony between first and second floors. Top two storeys are straight not battered. Nondescript brick and pantile two storey buildings attached. Built 1821 by millwrights Norman and Smithson of Hull replacing an earlier post mill on the same site. From 1854 until 1962 the mill was owned by the Thompson family, who also owned a steam roller mill in Hull and a water mill at Welton. Converted to the production of animal foodstuffs by raising the mill tower, building additional outbuildings and installing new animal feed machines. Converted to electric power in 1954. Acquired by Beverley RDC in 1962 as a museum. Restored to full working, using wind power once again, in 1974. This Grade II* listed building is now the last working windmill in East Yorkshire.
