Rippon Bros Works - Huddersfield

Rolls-Royce 25/30 limousine, 1936.
Built by Rippon for Thomas Marmaduke Wormald, born Dewsbury, 1860. By 1881 he had joined the family business Wormalds & Walker, Ltd, blanket manufacturers, of Dewsbury Mills, Thornhill Road, Dewsbury, as a clerk. Later he was chairman. Also, a director of the Lancashire & Yorkshire Bank and the Manchester board of Martin’s Bank. He died in 1939.
Wormalds and Walker Limited, blanket manufacturers, were established in 1811 as Hague and Cook. In 1821 Percival Wormald joined the partnership, bringing capital and financial know-how. In 1851 Percival’s nephew, and Thomas’s father, John, joined the business; John Walker joined the partnership in 1866. In the 1920s/30s two members of the Walker family also owned Rolls-Royces bodied by Rippon.
In 1966 W & W acquired John Atkinson & Son, blanket manufacturers, Sowerby Bridge, themselves being bought by A W Hainsworth in 1983. Today (2017) John Atkinson blankets are made in Hainsworth’s mill, Stanningley.
