Return to Map

Description and History of Site:-

site redeveloped for housingJames Henry Cookson & Sons Ltd operated West Yorkshire Alum Works adjoining Lofthouse Colliery when they opened a brickworks around 1895. They continued to operate it until after 1904. By 1917 the works had passed to George Armitage & Sons Ltd. It is not known if it passed directly, or if a third party intervened or it was closed for a period. The new owners greatly enlarged the works which took shale from a pit to the north which steadily expanded northwards until the quarry was closed around 1960 with shale then having to be brought in. The works closed around 1970.
The works have been variously known also as Lofthouse brickworks, and Lofthouse Colliery brickworks
