Ferry Bridge

Description and History of Site:-

Tooled millstone grit ashlar. Round-headed arches, three larger river arches, four smaller land arches to the west and one to the east.Built 1804 to carry the Great North Road over the River Aire. Restoration in the 20th century. The first bridge at this site was built in 1198 and rebuilt at the end of the 14th century. A toll bridge until 1810. Now (2018) closed to vehicular traffic but in use as a footbridge.
