Gedham Mill

Description and History of Site:-

Purpose built in 1898 for Robert Elston Phillips as a mungo works. Let in 1900 to John Henry Glover and Walter Ellis at a rent of £360 per year. A complex of single story buildings including warehouse, rag grinding sheds, engine house (containing a 30 HP horizontal engine), boiler house, chimney, dyehouse and carbonising plant. The six grinding machines were all locally made. Electricity for lighting purposes was generated on site.

In the period just following WW1, considerable quantities of war surplus woollen clothing were available at good prices and the mill was quite successful, due to its relatively modern and efficient operation, compared to other mungo and shoddy manufacturers. However the depression of the 1920's sparked an ongoing downturn in the trade from which it never really recovered. Over the following decades, the various elements were sub-let and eventually sold for separate use as warehouses, by dyers and for the manufacture of glass fibre. Mungo production ceased altogether by 1965. Eventually the whole site was reacquired by R D Glover (grandson of the original founder of the operation) in 1968 for use by his RGS Pattern Book Co. Ltd. The chimney and parts of the mill were demolished in 1970, RGS Pattern Book Company ceased trading in 2001, and the remainder of the mill demolished in 2009.
