Cumberland Works

Description and History of Site:-

Now (2019) almost all used as a car park, though one building towards the northern edge of the site appears to be still standing (https://britainfromabove.org.uk/image/epw043150).

Giles and Goodall wrote :"Woolcombing works, established 1875. Bradford became the centre of the woolcombing industry, with a number of large establishments. Cumberland Works has typical layout: large sheds form main working areas, with storage basement permitted by the fall of land. The sheds were probably designed by Thomas Barker, engineer, of Bradford. Addition of large multi-storeyed warehouses, both by Thomas Barker, in 1887 and 1910 reflects changing role of the woolcomber, who came to act as main supply agency to the worsted industry, holding large stocks of raw wool and despatching it in combed state to local spinners and manufacturers. Site also had grease works and soap-making works."
