Dunkirk Mill

Description and History of Site:-

Giles & Goodall wrote: "Water-powered worsted-spinning mill, established c1800. Main building is a two-storeyed eight-bay mill largely of c1870 but incorporating remains of early mill in area of wheelhouse. Cottages, a mill extension used in the late 19th century for corn milling, remains of added steam power plant, and extensive headrace and mill dam complete the complex. Waterwheel replaced by a water turbine, still in situ."

The origins and development of Dunkirk Mill were studied in some depth by Ian Mellor in 2005 who was then able to observe that "... the mill has remained in the ownership of the same family since the early twentieth century and the opportunity was therefore taken to inspect the mill in the company of the current owner providing some invaluable insights into its past. Textile production ceased at the site in the early twentieth century but the mill remains relatively unaltered."

Now (2019) appears to have been refurbished to residential accommodation.
