Benyons'Mill

Return to Map

Description and History of Site:-

Giles & Goodall wrote: "Steam-powered flax-spinning mill built by Benyons and Bage in 1802-3, the multi-storeyed mill and contemporary warehouse and hand-heckling block being the first fireproof textile mill buildings in Yorkshire. Integration achieved by addition of weaving shops for handlooms in 1804-5. Later additions included gas plant of c1815. Demolished."

Still marked as Benyon's Mill (Flax) on the OS 6" map of 1846, the site had been redeveloped (or possibly completely rebuilt) as Holbeck Mills (Woollen) by 1889. The whole area now (2019) redeveloped to mixed commercial and residential.
